'Fred Boissonnas: The Sinai Expeditions 1929-1933'

François-Frédéric Boissonnas (1858-1946), to be known later as Fred, was born into a family of photographers and photographic innovators. In 1929 and 1933 Frédéric Boissonnas set off on photographic expeditions to Sinai, following the route of the Israelites as recorded in the book of Exodus and photographing the traditional Biblical sites that he encountered on his journey. The Sinai Expeditions was to be the photographer's last great project and, as with the late work of many artists, it serves to encapsulate a lifetime of professional knowledge and experimentation with a condensing of his overall philosophy of life and art. This catalogue presents for the first time to the public photographs that have been never published before. It contains a foreword by His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and three essays: 'The Sinai: Travel Photography as Pilgrimage', 'Photography, Landscape and the Sacred', and 'The Photographic Techniques of Fred Boissonnas'.
